Operation Sandwich

In an effort to meet youth hunger needs during the summer months, the Brainerd School District and Operation Sandwich will begin providing free meals to students 18 years of age and younger in June.

Breakfast and lunch will be served Mondays through Fridays, June 6th to August 26th at the Washington Educational Services Building in Brainerd. A rotating menu includes pizza, hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken filet on a bun, chicken nuggets and a sub sandwich.

Breakfast is served from 8:30 to 9 am and lunch from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm. Meals are available free of charge for all students up to 18-years-old.

Operation Sandwich will also begin its summer cycle the first Monday after school concludes until the last Thursday before school reconvenes. From June 6th to September 1st, lunches will be prepared by volunteers and distributed Mondays through Thursdays during the lunch hour at Garfield, Harrison and Lowell elementaries, Kiwanis Park in Brainerd, and Whipple Beach in Baxter.

All items provided by Operation Sandwich come from donations. Current needs include granola bars, fruit snacks, juice boxes, plastic sandwich bags and fruit (bananas, oranges, apples). Gift cards to local grocery stores and cash donations are encouraged. Volunteers are also being sought to assist with meal prep, bagging and distribution during the week as well as distributing books on Mondays. Groups are encouraged to sign up and assist.

Each Monday, the Book Café follows Operation Sandwich to Lowell, Garfield and Harrison schools and distributes new and gently used, age appropriate books to children picking up lunch.
