Maple I will, Maple I Won’t
“Sugaring” has been practiced for hundreds of years in Minnesota and is still popular today. Two Brainerd-area Master Naturalists, Brenda Charpentier and Lorraine Briddon, will explore maple syrup production past and present. Lorraine will share the history of Indigenous people’s processing and use of the sweet treat from the maple tree. Brenda, who gathers and boils her own harvest of maple sap at her home in Mission, will explain her backyard techniques for anyone interested in giving sugaring a try.
During Lorraine’s work as a pharmacist for the Indian Health Service, she developed special interests in Native American culture and traditions. She has taught classes for adult learners about Navajo history, Indian mounds, and the Code Talkers.
Brenda is a retired conservation educator and writer who enjoys foraging for wild foods.
This program is hosted by the Brainerd Lakes Area Chapter of Master Naturalists and is free and open to the public.
