Brainerd History Week

June 14, 2016 - June 19, 2016

This year’s celebration of our local history will showcase Northeast Brainerd. Much of Brainerd’s early industry started in NE, starting with Brainerd Lumber Co. that moved here from Gull River Village giving us the name of a street called Mill Avenue! An early pulp mill was built on the west side of the river, and later a paper mill on the east side. The area supported two brick yards, prompting a railroad spur to be built to the area. Did you know there was even a turntable and roundhouse on the shore of Rice Lake for the Brainerd & Northern Minnesota Railroad? There was also a car barn for the electric street car rail line next to the power plant. The turntable pit was lined with Brainerd Brick, and it had a steel turntable.
