DESCRIPTION:Join Master Weaver Shannon Lucas Westrum for a hands-on basket weaving workshop\, where you’ll craft a versatile basket perfect for hearth or harvest. Under the expert guidance of Shannon and her apprentice\, you’ll build a sturdy grid base and weave the sides around an 8″ square hoop. You’ll also learn to create cordage from local grasses or leaves and work with birch bark for decorative accents.\nThe finished basket will measure 8″ high\, 9″ wide\, and 14″ long—a beautiful and functional piece to take home. Thanks to an Arts Education Grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board\, participant cost for this workshop has been reduced by more than 50% and all materials are included free of cost.\nInstructor will provide all necessary tools (shears\, weights\, towels\, wash tubs\, etc).\nHand dexterity required. Ages 14+\nThere will be a 1/2hr lunch break. DESCRIPTION:Join us in welcoming artist Sam Zimmerman for an artist talk and reception at The Crossing Arts Alliance on Friday\, May 16th from 5:00 – 7:00 PM. Nibble on snacks\, enjoy good company\, and learn more about the artist! This event is free and open to the public.\nThis exhibition\, “Walking the Shores”\, is a collection of acrylic and watercolor paintings by Sam Zimmerman capturing the animal\, bird\, and fish relatives that he has experienced along the North Shore of Lake Superior. Find out which bird—and where you can hear it today! This story was passed down through the Zimmerman family and features traditional knowledge from the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa. “How the Birds Got Their Songs” was written by Travis Zimmerman\, illustrated by Sam Zimmerman\, and retold in Ojibwemowin by Marcus Ammesmaki.\nLet’s gather for a very special read-along with the illustrator of this book on Friday\, May 16th from 3:30-4:30PM! Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult. Prior registration is required so we know how many little bookworms to expect.\nSliding scale—pay what you can!
