But after his pitch for the fourth season is rejected by the network\, he returns home to Minnesota looking for inspiration. His timing is fortunate — his former classmate Ro Greeman is now a local police officer\, and she’s uncovered new information about the devastating hit and run that killed their mutual friend Ricky the summer after high school. On Monday\, February 3\, 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m.\, Charles Marohn will discuss his recent book\, “Escaping the Housing Trap: The Strong Towns Response to the Housing Crisis.” In the book\, renowned urbanists Marohn and Daniel Herriges introduce a first-of-its-kind discussion of the tension between housing as a financial product and housing as shelter. This is the key insight that’s been missing from the Housing Crisis Conversation; and the insight that can help cities fight back against the crisis from the bottom-up. This book offers a serious\, yet accessible\, history of housing policy in the United States and explains how it led us to this point in time: where we face a market that is rigged against people who\, only a few decades ago\, could have been homeowners or stable\, long-term rentals. Only local change\, on a neighborhood or city-wide scale\, can begin to restore balance to the housing market.\nCharles Marohn\, known as “Chuck” to friends and colleagues\, is the founder and president of Strong Towns. He is a civil engineer and a land use planner with decades of experience. He holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and a Master of Urban and Regional Planning\, both from the University of Minnesota.\nMarohn is the author of “Strong Towns: A Bottom-Up Revolution to Rebuild American Prosperity” (Wiley\, 2019)\, and of “Confessions of a Recovering Engineer: Transportation for a Strong Town” (Wiley\, 2021). Payne will discuss her new thriller\, “Rabbit Moon.”\nIn the book\, Marin Sinclair\, end-of-life doula\, doesn’t expect her life to be in danger when she answers a mysterious plea for help from a long-ago friend and returns to Dinetah\, the Navajo Nation. Her past there holds memories she is reluctant to confront\, but what about her life then would make someone want to kill her? Navajo Nation Police Sergeant Justin Blue Eyes shares a connection with Marin from the past\, and he has a few questions of his own when Marin disappears―such as why the Nuclear Regulatory Commission has agents investigating the abandoned uranium mines on the reservation and how Marin is connected. Marin needs to survive to find any answers\, and to do so she is forced to run\, going off the grid on her own in the Lukachukai mountains with unknown killers close behind.\nJan Payne lived on the Dineh (Navajo) reservation on the New Mexico side of the Lukachukai mountain range\, where she climbed the mesas\, took horseback camping trips\, explored mountain ghost towns\, and worked with her dad training horses. Her most memorable summer jobs include working with pack-mule trains at a dude ranch and a brief stint as camp cook in a uranium mining camp. A graduate of Shiprock High School in Shiprock\, New Mexico\, she also holds university and medical degrees\, as well as a graduate degree in Christian Studies from Regent College in Vancouver\, British Columbia. Payne is a member of Western Writers of America and Women Writing the West and she and her husband\, Jon\, live in the Leech Lake area of northern Minnesota with their three big dogs―Kaibab\, Rudi\, and Orrin. DESCRIPTION:Join us as we celebrate the release of Julie Guths Children’s book “Bailey’s Big Spirit”\, Tuesday\, December 10 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Brainerd Public Library! Join us for author readings and treats! \nThe book Illustrated and written by Julie Guth:\nBailey befriends a puppy named Spirit.\nBut then something terrible happens. Spirit grows into a big dog\, and Bailey doesn’t like big dogs. Not only is Spirit much larger than Bailey\, but the two are different in many ways. Follow Bailey on her journey from dislike and fear to\nBecoming Spirit’s best friend. \nJulie loves animals\, especially dogs. She trained and worked with a previous companion dog\, Sundance\, who was certified as a therapy dog. The two of them volunteered for six years in a fifth-grade classroom where Sundance was the “reading dog”. She and her current canine companion \, Nikki\, have been involved for more than two years in AKC agility training \nOne of Julie’s life goals has been to write and illustrate children’s books. An avid reader since elementary school\, she had a desire to contribute to the body of wonderful children’s literature she enjoyed as a child. Her experiences as an elementary teacher and psychologist strengthened that desire. \nJulie’s background in art and literature is extensive. While drawing was her initial foray into the visual arts\, her art teachers in middle school through high school introduced her to a variety of media and helped hone her skills. Among these media were metal\, clay\, collage\, and oil and watercolor painting. In similar fashion\, Julie’s supportive and exacting English teachers helped develop her love of literature and ability to write coherently. She has experimented with writing poetry (especially haiku)\, short stories\, and novels. Her most direct connection to children’s books comes from a series of books she wrote for a program co-developed during her pre-retirement employment\, two of which were for kids.\nOne of Julie’s favorite children’s story characters is Peter Pan. Like Peter\, she never wanted to grow up (though she’s fine with growing older). Brainerd Public Library welcomes Minnesota author Art Coulson to discuss his new works for adults.\nCoulson is a writer of Cherokee\, English and Dutch descent. The 2023 McKnight Fellow in Children’s Literature\, Art is the author of 20 books\, graphic novels and plays for children\, including the middle grade novel\, Chasing Bigfoot (2022)\, the picture book\, Look\, Grandma! Ni\, Elisi! (2021)\, and the forthcoming picture book\, All the Stars in the Sky (Simon & Schuster\, fall 2025). He is a teaching artist at the Loft Literary Center in Minneapolis and coordinates the Native Authors Program for All My Relations Arts.\nAlthough he is known primarily for his books for young readers\, Coulson’s next two writing projects will be his first novels for adults.\nThe reading in Brainerd is made possible by a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board.
