DESCRIPTION:Join hundreds of anglers and snowmobile enthusiasts at the Cuyuna Lakes Chamber’s 16th Annual Ice Fishing Contest and Scorpion Homecoming on Saturday\, Feb. 1\, from 12 to 3 p.m. on Serpent Lake near Crosby’s Memorial Park. \nThe tournament boasts more than $1\,000 in prizes for lucky or skilled anglers and prizes are awarded to fish of all sizes during the three-hour contest. Entry tickets are $10 for each hole and include the chance to win five raffle prizes. [Prize details will be added here shortly.] In addition\, food and beverages will be sold in an ice-arming tent and there will be a raffle for numerous other prizes donated by the community. \nScorpion Homecoming dusts off wonderful old machines and recalls a time when the Cuyuna Lakes was among the largest snowmobile producers in the world. Numerous Scorpions will be on display and a trail ride is planned. The 2020 featured sled is the Range Whip\, Scorpion’s popular mid-size sports machine. The homegrown Range Whip featured a two-seat configuration and powerful Cuyuna engine. All Range Whip model years (1976-1978) and engine sizes will be featured at the Homecoming\, both original and restored. Special Range Whip commemorative buttons and other Scorpion memorabilia will be sold at the tournament’s on-ice warming tent. \nNew this year\, to initiate the onset of the ice fishing contest\, the Crosby-Ironton Chamber singers will perform the National Anthem on the ice\, while being accompanied by the Ironton American Legion Color Guard. SUMMARY:Becoming Obsolete (Gallery Exhibition)
DESCRIPTION:Central Lakes College Art Gallery presents ‘Becoming Obsolete’\, Artwork by Martin Nelson. This exhibition showcases collage and mixed media work of Martin Nelson\, as he observes the changing world around us. Viewed from many different angles\, ‘Becoming Obsolete’\, speaks of the growing tension between us as humans and the world that we live in\, a world that is falling apart before our eyes\, due to our own actions. Natural disasters are becoming more extreme and global warming is at an all-time high\, all leading us and our surroundings to become obsolete\, out of date\, and used up at a growing rate with minimal signs of improvement in sight. In addition to the environmental aspect\, ‘Becoming Obsolete’\, focuses on traditions\, cultures\, ways of life which have all been pushed aside to make room for the “new” and next big thing. Ideas and themes of the old ways playing alongside futuristic entities are entertained throughout various pieces on display. Both of these situations of obsoleteness mix together based off of each other’s physical shifts\, as well as outside influences\, through current events of our time. In the end\, this exhibition presents everything for what it is\, as it all interacts together\, as well as sending a wakeup call to open your eyes and take a stand. \nMartin Nelson is a 2017 graduate of Central Lakes College in the Graphic Design program. He has exhibited his work at the Plains Art Museum\, Fargo\, ND\, and Minneapolis Institute of Arts\, Minneapolis\, MN\, along with other select galleries and exhibition spaces both locally and nationally. In 2016 his work was published in Studio Visit Magazine Vol. 33. He currently lives in Sturgeon Bay\, Wisconsin and works out of his home studio there. \nAn artist talk will accompany the exhibition and be held on Thursday\, February 6\, from 3:00 – 3:30 pm in the CLC Art Gallery\, room #E422. Visitors will learn more about the artwork in the exhibition and how it all came together\, along with Martin’s personal creative process for creating his work. Molly primarily works in acrylic painting\, as it is the medium she started with and is most fluent in. She also enjoys working with oil pastel and mixed media\, and has recently delved into larger work through murals\, as well as the medium of body painting. Over the last few years\, Molly has learned to paint more from her heart\, rather than her head and past knowledge. Her love of storytelling\, personal memories\, and emotions have all made their way into her creative process and finished artwork. DESCRIPTION:A winter cycling event to raise funds for the Cuyuna Lakes Mountain Bike Trails. The Whiteout consists of a fat tire bike race\, an ice bike race\, a night time fat bike group ride\, and tons of winter biking shenanigans. \nThe 45NRTH Whiteout is raced on the Cuyuna Lakes Mountain Bike Trails\, located in the Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area near Crosby\, MN\, feature 25 miles of renowned single track red dirt mountain bike trails\, ranging from easy to expert-level courses. Considered among the best trail systems in the world\, the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA)\, has named the Cuyuna Lakes Mountain Bike Trails a Ride Center\, an elite status shared by only 26 other trail systems in the world. \nThe Whiteout is unique in Great Lakes Fat Bike Series because the race route is a single “great loop” that is majority single track. The 45NRTH Whiteout has 3 different lengths\, depending on your mood: 30k\, 20k and 10k. \n100% of the proceeds from the 45NRTH Whiteout will benefit the expansion and maintenance efforts of the Cuyuna Lakes Mountain Bike Trails.
