Turbo Weekend! Import and sport compacts take over BIR
September 10, 2016 - September 13, 2016
Imports and sport compacts invade BIR this weekend for drag racing, drifting, autocross, lapping, burnout contests, car shows, stage shows and a lot more. A second weekend is Sept. 9-11.
Look to BIR for a massive collection of imports and sport compact cars Sept. 11-13. The Modern Automotive Performance Proving Grounds is back again this year with a bigger and better show that features drag racing, drifting and autocross competitions, burnout contests, open lapping on the road course, a car show and a whole lot more.
The Proving Grounds features front-wheel, rear-wheel and all-wheel-drive cars and trucks, some of which are turbo charged. The fan favorite has been the drifting competition, where drivers are timed as they navigate through a course mostly in controlled (or uncontrolled, in some cases) skids. Translation: lots of smoke, burnt rubber and screeching.
Autocross is similar in that drivers are timed as they maneuver through a course, but they’re slower and more controlled without the skidding. Open lapping – called Time Attack – is on the road course, where cars aren’t racing against each other but race against the clock while gunning for the quickest time.
Drag racing is also very popular as fans get to watch some very quick cars in several classes. It’s not unusual to see some 8- and 9-second cars on the quarter mile. Import bikes have their own class as well.
There’s also a competition for those who want to compete in Triple Track Showdown, where drivers accumulate points by competing in drag racing, autocross and the Time Attack open lapping.
