In our final symphony spectacular, the Lakes Area Music Festival will be joined by international superstar soprano, Julia Bullock in Mahler’s Symphony No. 4. This expansive work, the largest scale symphony ever produced by LAMF, depicts a child’s view of heaven. Bullock will also perform Samuel Barber’s In our fina Knoxville, Summer of 1915, in which a childlike voice narrates the fall of night in America.

Knoxville is one of America’s quintessential works, with words by author James Agee, music by composer Samuel Barber, and the impetus for its creation being soprano Eleanor Steber; all three being amongst America’s most celebrated artists. But at its heart, this piece is not about being American. It is about recalling a time when you are young and feel that the world is ideal. After the first major loss of a loved one, you not only begin to appreciate those around you, but you begin the process of identifying who you are and what you value.

This theme of maturation being seen through the eyes of a child also races through Mahler’s Fourth Symphony. It closes with the voice of an angel, or how a child might imagine an angel to be; and paired with each angelic delight, there’s an acknowledgement of violence and sacrifice.
