Paddle on Mississippi River for Brainerd History Week – Brainerd, MN

June 15, 2017 @ 12:00 pm - 2:30 pm

A banner recognizing Brainerd History Week hangs above the front steps of Brainerd City Hall Friday afternoon. Brainerd History Week begins Tuesday. (Brainerd Dispatch/Kelly Humphrey)

Community members are invited to a paddle down the Mississippi River during a Brainerd History Week event and learn more above the river’s history.

Paddlers should meet at 5 p.m. June 15 at the Evergreen Cemetery landing. At 5:30 p.m., paddle leaders will be able to help those unfamiliar with how to paddle, get paired up with an appropriate kayak or canoe and also to be fitted with a lifejacket. Paddlers are encouraged to bring their own lifejacket. Paddle leaders will also go over safety procedures.

From 5:45-6 p.m., local historian Carl Faust will talk about river history and laminated maps will be handed out, so each paddler has a reference while they paddle. The paddlers will launch at 6 p.m.

The flotilla will arrive at the Kiwanis Park landing at about 7:30 p.m. Faust will be there to answer any questions about sites along the river. A shuttle will be available to get paddlers back to the launch site.

This event is up to the discretion of the paddle leaders. Weather and river current play a deciding factor.

There are a limited number of kayaks and canoes available for rent. Rental costs are $20 per boat. Pre-registration can be made by contacting Holly Holm at Brainerd Community Action, 218-829-5278. Paddlers are encouraged to bring their own kayak or canoe.

During this event, participants will get wet, at least up to the knees. Please wear appropriate clothing and shoes. Waivers must be signed by all participants.
