“A More Sustainable World” from Pine River

Since 1999 on the 60-acre campus of Hunt Utilities Group (HUG) in Pine River, has been conducting reaearch for sustainable living, renewable energy and high efficiency sustainable housing.  Combining traditional building methods with state of the art technologies furthers the goal of learning how to build houses that heat and cool themselves without or with reduced fossil fuels, help feed the occupants, and have zero sewage effluent.  The long-range view of the campus is to create ‘living labs’ with the structures used for residential, commercial, retail and business incubators for small industry. One of the “incubator” successes is Rural Renewable Energy Alliance (RREAL) a non-profit energy group that installs solar systems and is developing their own solar hot air collectors to be used with manufactured homes and low-income families.  Another effort is the non-profit Happy Dancing Turtle with a mission to “promote sustainable living” through holding community classes and special events.  Ryan Hunt, R&D Development Manager at HUG will share developments and alternative ways to construct cost-efficient homes.
